Periodontal disease, commonly known as Gum Disease, is an oral condition that affects a lot of adults in the UK. It causes swelling, redness and pain in your gums. The disease is very common in the UK, with nine out of ten people having some form of gum disease in their lifetime.

If you’ve noticed that your gums bleed when brushing your teeth, you may have gum disease. As gum disease develops, it can damage the tissues that support your teeth. This can weaken your jawbone and gums, eventually leading to your teeth to fall out.
Poor Oral Hygiene
Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of gum disease. Brushing your teeth twice a day is fundamentally important to ensure your teeth, gums and tongue are clean.
During the day, the food and drinks you consume can leave bacteria in and around your mouth. Brushing your teeth prevents plaque from building up and irritating your gums.
Smoking is another common cause for gum disease. Unlike non-smokers, cigarettes can heavily damage the health of your gums. Smoking can give users a false impression that their gums are healthy because their gums are less likely to bleed or visibly increase in redness.
Inhaling the smoke and the chemicals inside a cigarette can interfere with the flow of blood to the gums. This is an unwelcoming thing to happen because it slows down the gums healing process, damaging them severely.
Although stress can be damaging to your mental health, it can also affect your physical health. Studies show that stress affects your immune system. This has a knock-on effect on the protection of your body.
Your immune system is vital in protecting your body as well as its importance for maintaining your oral hygiene. If your immune system is affected, it struggles to combat the bacteria building up in your mouth which could eventually lead to gum disease.
